We are a local, self funded charity which started as Wokingham Mencap in 1997 run by a group of parent carers. We moved into our first office in Rose Street, Wokingham, in 2000 with one part time paid member of staff. Since those early days we have gone from strength to strength and developed into the thriving charity we are today, overseen by a Board of Trustees. In 2009 we became a Company Limited by Guarantee and became Wokingham, Bracknell & Districts Mencap Ltd. with a new charity number and a new branch in Bracknell. As an independent charity, affiliated to, but not financed by, the Royal Mencap Society, we have to raise over £200,000 each year to both develop and maintain our services.
We are an advocate for rights and services for our members and we work with local authorities and health commissioners to make sure that our members have their voices heard.
We believe that people with learning disabilities/ASC have the right to:
All the work we do is focused towards these aims. Our organisation is always open to new ideas and aims to achieve high standards in everything we do.
You can find contact details for the Wokingham, Bracknell and District Mencap office on our Contact Us page. We work in partnership with other local voluntary organisations that support people with a learning disability and ASC and with Wokingham Borough and Bracknell Forest Borough councils. We also play a prominent role in local Learning Disability Partnership Boards and some of their associated sub groups.
