Quality Care Scheme

The Quality Care scheme involves teams of inspectors - which could be either carers or a carer plus a person with a learning disability - reviewing registered and supported living homes or services for adults with learning disabilities and/or ASC and then preparing a report highlighting good practice and areas for improvement. This scheme was developed and trialled over 2012.

The aim of the scheme is to ensure the best quality of care for people with learning disabilities/ASC to give them the chance of having the best quality of life possible and allow them to have choice and control in their lives, with the same opportunities and responsibilities and to be treated with the same dignity and respect as other citizens.

The scheme differs from 'statutory' audit schemes such as Care Quality Commission inspections which look at compliance with statutory regulations. Our teams look at such things as:

  • Accommodation
    • Cleanliness
    • Food menu
    • Housekeeping
  • Health and Safety
    • Accessibility for all residents to all areas
    • First Aid box
    • Smoke alarm
    • Carbon monoxide alarm
    • Medication procedure
    • Security of building appropriate to residents' needs
  • Staff
    • Shift rotas
    • Staff training
    • Is there a shift supervisor?
    • Handover procedures
    • Communication procedures for residents and parents/carers
    • Ratio of permanent to agency staff
    • Is there a driver on duty for offsite activities
    • Keyworkers
    • Is there flexibility to allow residents to stay out beyond end of shift time?
    • Is there a regular parent/carer and/or resident forum meeting?
  • Care provider
    • Communication
    • Incident/accident reports
    • Care plans/person centred plans
    • Finance
  • Residents' views

The scheme can be tailored to meet the needs of the client.
